Disc Golf
Disc Golf is a widely popular sport in Houston, and the predominant sport supported by HFDS. Greater Houston is host to over 18 disc golf courses, the most in any city worldwide! These courses are scattered in public parks throughout the city and surrounding communities. HFDS works hand-in-hand as volunteer partners with the local parks departments to support and maintain these courses.
Disc golf is played like ball golf, only using specialized plastic discs. Metal chain catching baskets act as the pin, with players counting the number of throws required from the tee area until the disc rests in the basket. Golf discs are normally weighted and more aerodynamic than most common discs, and can be molded to travel short or long distances or to fade left or right.
The PDGA’s website, www.pdga.com can provide more details about the sport, its rules, sanctioned tournaments, and the location of courses over the world!

Double Disc Court [DDC]
DDC is a game gaining popularity in Houston, played by two teams of two players each. The DDC field consists of two (2) 13 meters square ”courts” separated by a dead-zone of 17 meters. Two (2) lightweight orange DDC discs are used, and the game is started by each team throwing their disc at the start toward the other’s court. You get one point for a throw that lands and stays in the opponents' court. Your opponents get one point if your throw touches outside their court. If the other team is touching both discs at the same time, you get two points. A common strategy for escaping doubles is to tip one of the discs, then catch and throw the other disc back while the tipped disc is in the air.
More info about competitive DDC can be found at http://www.pellucid.com/conrad/ddc/. Informal DDC nights in Houston are held most every Wednesday evening throughout the year, starting at approx. 8:30pm. Location can vary, depending on park availability, but is often held near Shepard and I-10. Call first for up to date info, 281-380-2697

Ultimate
Ultimate is a very popular game played throughout the city of Houston. The Houston Ultimate Community [HUC] is a 501c(3) non-profit, member-driven organization which strives to promote the sport of Ultimate in the greater Houston area by hosting leagues, tournaments, practices, and instructional clinics
The game of Ultimate is played by two seven-player teams with a large diameter, big rimmed disc . The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds.

Guts
Noted as “The Original X-treme Sport”TM and “The Grand-Daddy of All Disc Sports”TM, Guts is a disc sport played by two teams of five players each. Each team lines up facing each other on two parallel goal lines 14 m apart. The disc is thrown back and forth between the two teams, with the objective to throw the disc through the line of defensive players in such a manner that the opposing team cannot make a clean catch.
The disc used for championships is the Pro model Frisbee. For informal play, any lightweight, blunt-rim disc can be used. During catching, a player may never touch a disc with more than one part of the body at a time. The throwing team scores a point each time the defense does not catch a fair disc cleanly. While throwing, the disc must arrive at the opposite goal line within the reach of defensive team, and with the bottom of the disc facing downward. The receiving team scores a point each time the disc is not thrown correctly. When a fair disc is caught by the other team, no points are scored, and the throw is returned by the player who caught the disc. The team reaching 21 points first wins.
More details about the game of Guts can be found at www.gutsfrisbee.com. A small cell of Guts players has started in Houston, and is growing every day! Informal Guts nights in Houston are held at the whim of local players. Contact Dave “Nez” Nesbitt for more details

Freestyle
Performing creative, artistic and athletic moves with flying discs is the essence of freestyle. One of the most dramatic events in disc sports, competitive freestyle combines aspects of gymnastics and dance with the basic game of throw and catch. Teams of two or three players perform choreographed routines consisting of throws, catches and moves with one or more discs. Starting with simple moves like a behind-the-back catch, freestyle has evolved into a crowd-pleasing event with moves such as air brushes, nail delays, and triple-spinning catches.
