Disc Golf in League City
I've been working with the parks department in League City on a course proposal for one of their parks for most of this year. Things are looking very positive and the city is now making sure that the proposed design doesn't impact the wetlands in the park. Once that gets cleared up I expect we'll start clearing and fundraising for baskets.
The course will initially be a 9 hole course with long and short tees. The course will play along a small creek for four holes and then play five holes in the woods. Imagine a shorter TAT/Timberlane hybrid without the open holes and you'll get a good idea what the park has to offer. There is a possibility of expanding the course to 18 in the future when the park expands to the other side of the creek but for now it's going to be 9 holes. The final design is still being worked on but the proposal was well received and I hope we'll get started clearing holes in September. Basket sponsorships will be available for $500 a hole. I'm working on the sponsorship package but if you're interested, please let me know. I've already had two sponsorships pledged and some other straight up donations pledged. If you'd like to come walk the course with me and see what is in store, PM me and let me know. If you're on the southeast side of town and want to help out I'll be organizing workdays out there via the Bay Area Disc Golf group on Facebook and here. This park has huge potential for disc golf, especially if we can expand to 18 in the future. The plan for the additional 9 include playing alongside Clear Creek in one of it's most scenic sections :D. Keep your fingers crossed that there are no wetland issues and we get the final approval to get things started soon! |
Re: Disc Golf in League City
Thats great. Glad to hear we will have another place to play.
On a side note....I just wish we could start focusing on creating 18 hole courses and not 9 hole courses. I believe in quality over quanity and Houston is being saturated with mini golf. I have traveled to different courses and Houston generaly has small holes with minimal challenge. All the better courses are outside Houston. Spring Valley, Woodlands, Jack Brooks:cool:. The new course I keep hearing about...Army Trail is a good example of placing 18 holes that are challenging. Many people are talking about how hard yet fun the course is. Please dont take this the wrong way. I am very excited that you are working on creating new areas to play and working with the city. Glad you have stepped up and provided a voice for the southside. Thank you. |

Re: Disc Golf in League City
I met with the Park Operations this morning and everything is looking good for the course. The Parks folks are very excited about the course and are going to try to line up funding to hire a contractor for major clearing of the wooded fairways. If everything goes well we will be breaking ground on the course in October. The proposed name for the course is Magnolia Creek Disc Golf Course and it will be located in Countryside Park.
In the mean time we're going to start reserving baskets for sponsorships. If you're interested in sponsoring a basket please let me know. Basket sponsorships will be $500 and sponsors will be credited on both the basket and two tee signs (In addition we're looking for a sponsor for the practice basket/course rules sign). We currently have over $1600 in pledged sponsorships & donations! We're also looking for volunteers to help with clearing and installation. You can keep up to date on the details and work days on the Bay Area Disc Golf group on Facebook. |
