2009 Worlds Biggest
I saw an ad in The Woodlands Community Magazine for the '09 Worlds Biggest Disc Golf Weekend event being held in May. I'd heard of this before, but I haven't been playing long enough to have been to one. It says it's a 2-day event with a tournament on the second day (the 3rd). I assume the first day is just a big clinic for all of the first timers?
I was also kind of surprised that it was being held at Bear Branch. I suppose having it in The Woodlands brings in more people than the communities around other courses. Is there only one event in the Houston area or are other courses hosting one too? Anyway, I just figured I could learn a bit more about the event from some of you that have been in the past than what is on their website. |
Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
Jack Brooks has always held one. I wonder who's actually running the one out in The Woodlands. Any information on who is actually doing it?

Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
It didn't say in the magazine. I thought someone on here would know more.
Also, a Woodlands event isn't on the list of locations registered. |
Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
Could it be those folks who did something out at McDade awhile back?

Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
The Woodlands Parks & Recreation wants to hold the tourney.
I'm assisting. (I "ran" the World's Biggest a few years back while working at Circular Productions) The basic premise of World's Biggest is not competition but inclusion and introduction of the the sport to new & non-players. Because of printing deadlines, we wanted to make sure the most basic information was published and will provide details as the weekend nears. Traditionally, it's a been a non competitive round of golf that's logged & added to all the other rounds played simultaneously at courses around the world on the same weekend. It's also a great value for the participant...you get a disc & tee shirt for entering. (usually $15 - $20 entry fee) As a long time player, I thrive on the friendly competition tournaments bring. I also like the idea of being a part of a "global tournament" that promotes the sport in such a positive way. Because of this, I'm open to adding some divisional competitive structure if enough players request it & the city folks agree. (it will not be sanctioned...unless required for insurance purposes) If we host a regular tournament at the same time (for an additional and seperate entry fee) I'd lean towards having it on Sunday so it won't conlict with the Jack Brooks WB. Remember, BB is a short & compact course and it will have loads of non players filling the course at the same time the serious players are attempting to compete. Anyway, post requests & suggestions. I'll update details as they are solidified. |
Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
Bear Branch is becoming more and more crowed. I think makeing the course clear for an event out there is going to be challenge. I have just about quit playing BB because it is so crowed on the weekends with casual players that don't let people play through.

Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
Batman, i agree with you here. what we need are more courses and not more players

Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
Thanks for the reply! Sounds like fun, I'll be there.
As for the casuals at BB, it seems like alot of them are more than happy to let you play through. If they don't offer, just ask. Recently, though, I've noticed that at times there are so many people out there playing that playing through won't really help you much, because there's another group on the next hole, and the next hole, and the next... Which you can pretty much only avoid by playing the course out of order. |
Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
When a tournament was held there, there were 4 well designed holes that were very open using the soccer fields that would keep it from getting too crowded. Might be a good idea to institute those holes again. :D

Re: 2009 Worlds Biggest
I always thought it would be sick to have a hole that plays from the fairway of #9, through the back pathway that runs up near #5 and meets the tee pad for #6, all the way to #6's basket. Par 4 or 5?
