It got some discussion on the DGCR forums, but the real cyber action is going on over at the Iowa forum:

When we first heard about this late last year we thought it would be very cool to get involved in....then we started hearing people talk about the logistics of it & how players could easily manipulate the system, so we kinda backed away from it a little bit. I'd almost rather see how it goes this year everywhere else & see if those fears were unfounded or not & then maybe get in on it next time.

How can players "easily manipulate the system"?

I don't see it unless there's some group conspiracy at a single event to have a bunch of high rated players intentionally tank their rounds to artificially skew SSA, and allow a small group of players to have artificially high ratings.

Listen, I have been working with Chuck on this idea from the beginning, and we definitely should get in on this. It is going to be a very cool event, and this event is a proving ground for what this ratings technology can really do.

I really hope Birdshot will take the lead on this - I will be glad to assist.

Yep, collusion to bump someone far up the Global ranks seems relatively easy under this system.

E.g. "Hey everyone let's get local good guy Dixon to win this whole Global thing. Everyone agree to miss a lot of putts and shoot ~50 points below your rating, but not too far below so that it gets thrown out."

Then Dixon shoots his normal 47, 48, 48 and racks up like three 1100+ rounds.

Not saying it would happen in Houston, but I'm just sayin'.

I can't tell if you're being facetious or not. Yes it could happen, but you'd have to have 75%+ of the field of a B-tier tournament intentionally tank their scores to (possibly) benefit a few selected ringers. I think most players that are serious enough to be PDGA members with ratings would not do that just to benefit a friend. Not only would they be hurting their own ratings, they'd be giving up on the potential to cash in the local portion of the event.

You'd have to pay my entry fee plus something for my time to get me to intentionally play 3 sanctioned rounds well below my rating for your gain.

And even if someone did have the money to bribe the entire field of a local event, it wouldn't be beneficial to that person in the long run. Yay, bragging rights for one virtual tournament, and a temporarily elevated rating that proves to be false over the next 6-8 tournaments.

I still have a lot of questions about how the global payout is going to work. The PDGA site hasn't really been clear as to how the 30-50% of your sign-up fees are going to be collected or distributed. The PDGA should get this stuff ironed out and to the clubs if they want to see more commitments.

In addition, limiting the am field to Advanced, Advanced Masters and Intermediate cuts about half the folks who attend Birdshot events. If we do run something like this event I'd want to offer Grand Masters and Rec divisions regardless of whether the player will be competing globally.

Then there is the weather. Houston players can expect to play in 100° plus weather while folks playing in Wisconsin may enjoy temps in the 80°. That is a big factor in how people play.

Regardless, Birdshot is interested and should have a final answer as to if we are going to participate in the next few weeks.
