Via e-mail to HFDS:
I work at Lindenwood University as the Director of Intramural Sports and I am an avid disc golfer. A few years ago we installed a course on campus and recently have started a club team. Last weekend we competed in the Gateway Collegiate Classic in our hometown of St. Louis, MO. I was surprised to see how many schools drove from across the country to compete in a disc golf tournament. I was even more surprised to hear how many more teams that are in existence and were not at the tournament. So the reason for my email is simple. I would like disc golf to become a "legitimate" collegiate sport and by legitimate I mean a sport where its athletes are on scholarship to play and that the school helps to pay entry fees and travel expenses. I am in a unique position to help make that happen. Lindenwood has historically been known to have a wide variety of club sports or as we call them "Student Life Sports". They have everything from Billards to Chess and Table Tennis to Debate. So my first thought after this weekend was this, "Why not disc golf?" I talked to the Director of Student Life Sports this morning and he said that this could be a possibility if we could do a few things: 1) Establish growth of the sport (not only among college students but among high school and middle school students). 2) Prove that Disc Golf would be a recruiting tool among high school students and existing college students. If you have any information on high school or collegiate disc golf that would be very helpful. I have already started to do some research on my end. Please contact me back. Also, if you know of any high schools students that would be interested in playing disc golf at the next level, please let me know. I do not have anything set in stone but I am trying to make progress towards something great. Thank you T.C.
