Default abandoned courses

How many courses in addition to Mason park, would you all say have been affectively abandoned?

I know I kind of continue to beat this idea up but what if we were able to remove what equipment still exist on these abandoned courses and had the best designers around here look at Mozola with a clean canvas to completely redesign the maximum amount of usefull property to build an 18 hole course.

Could it be done if you were to start with the idea that there are no baskets currently in the ground - a complete redesign to create a world class course on that property...

If it could be done, wouldn't it be worth the effort...you couldn't showcase Houston any better to the world than having that skyline in the backdrop of a brand new (possibly) world class course..

Could it happen?

I'm glad someone brought this up again because the old thread was lost with the last message board. I bet theres at least 20 baskets that could be gathered up from the abandoned junk courses like mason and used to expand a good course like Mozola or make a new one in Memorial Park. And what happened to the baskets at Rice University?

Dodson Lake Park, Glenshire, and Rice have all had their baskets pulled.

Not exactly sure, but Rice was always an object course and never had any baskets.

The City originally had more courses planned than what we have installed, but there were two 9-hole courses that were scrapped.

If you are truly interested in making a contribution towards getting courses such as Mozola and Jester expanded, then by all means, you should work with the HFDS club to help make this happen. All it will take to get a ball rolling is to draft up a proposal and bring to an HFDS meeting. The club is developing much better relationships with the City officials at Houston Parks and Rec. Deptartment and I think that we'd stand a good chance of gaining their support.

HPARD has placed the baskets from the courses that were pulled (and are slated to be pulled) and put them in their spare basket inventory. The inventory so far has been used to replace stolen baskets from Mozola and Moffitt.

We (the club) have lots of opportunity to do a little expansion if we can locate individuals that will draft up proposals for various disc golf related projects and let HFDS present them to the City officials.

I know that when I did the Moffitt Tee Box project, I found a template on the Internet somewhere for Microsoft Word that basically was a municipal project proposal thing. I edited my info into it, added a couple of pages of hand-drawn sketches and let HFDS present it to the park. It got approved and the project was done.

What it took was:
  1. Drawing up a proposal with appropriate verbiage and LOTS of pictures.
  2. Someone willing to drive the whole project.
  3. Blessings of the club to endorse the proposal and present it to the City.
  4. ...and probably that it cost the City very little since we absorbed about 90% of the cost of it.
Right now, I'm going to draft up a proposal to install bulletin/information boards at Mozola and TC Jester. Given enough time, I'll also start drafting a proposal for expansion of the Jester course, but if you want to do it, then I'll certainly let someone else take the lead on it.

There already is a proposal on the table with the City for expansion of Mozola. The hold-up on it is due to Glenwood Cemetary asserting that their property line extends WAY into the area we were considering using for the additional 9 holes.

I think we should consider drawing up a BIG pitch to HPARD for a championship level course or two located perhaps on the triangle at Memorial Park between the Loop, Memorial and Woodway. That area is unused and could certainly hold 1 full 18-hole course if not two carefully placed ones!

I think our membership should start being on the look-out for unused City Park-owned land that we could pitch for two. I think the thousands of disc golfers in this City would agree that we really need to have some Championship caliber courses!

Rice had both a 9 hole basket course, and an 18 hole object course (winding through the campus).

Do you guys know who to talk to about this? Seems like a great idea, but locating the people who can make those decisions will be a challenge.

Good Luck, and where in Memorial Park would you put a course?

If anyone has a name or number for contact at Mason Park, I'm willing to do some footwork to petition for the aquisition of whatever disc golf equipment is still there, before it all disappears.

I was thinking about Mozola since a course already exist it might be easier to propose a redesign. I read all the thoughts about not being able to fit another 9 quality holes there, but is that based on adding 9 more to how it currently exist.

What are the opinions of do you think it could host an awesome 18 hole course if it were redesigned from a clean canvas point of view?

I think they have already been working on that one at Mozola. As for the equipment and where it all went. Ask Andi Lehman if she has a contact for the parks dept or Conrad or Stimpy.

Any one else have any suggestions on where to start as to the disposition of the under-utilized baskets?
