Re: King me in Kingwood Aug 9th, 2008
I have to disagree. I think that the pitfall here has been that there may be more questionable venues for some of these events. I think that the turnouts point to this. The better venues have enjoyed full tournaments. There are some concepts like preregistration, card arrangements, and yes divisions, which have cause some problems from experienced people.
I for one like the Birdshot events as they do offer ANY player the opportunity to play in a LOCAL SANCTIONED EVENT! I think that this is where the heart of the matter lies. We used to have tournament events in Houston, and then they all went away for one reason or another. One group retired, one group just didn't follow through, and one group screwed some people. This is just the short list. Birdshot has committed none of these sins. I learned a new phrase this weekend in MI. "AMSCAM" was a term used by a lot of people when describing events. The term was explained to me, and from what I can tell, that is NOT what we have here. I do believe that Birdshot innocently suffers from inexperience. I think that we as a group need to support them with the understanding that improvements follow. I'm sure these guys could write a book on what they'll do better or different NEXT year. Shoot, they have even made changes needed from one tournament to the next!
The TD clinic is a good idea, as it may be the START of some future TDs in the area. I would recommend some experienced TDs step up and volunteer to participate in this clinic. I don't think that anybody coming to or from this clinic should go out and claim expert status afterwards, but it may at the very least answer some commonly misunderstood questions like "why do tournaments start late, or why does it take so long at the end of a tournament to wrap things up."
I guess my major concern still remaining is that if there is no Birdshot, then when the hell would we see tournaments in Houston again? These guys don't steal, and never intentionally offend anyone. They are just trying to offer locals a local option for tournaments. Having just paid out the ass for gas to and from Worlds, I can more than appreciate not having to go so far to play in a sanctioned event. Are they running tournaments that you'll read about in FDM? No, but they are running SANCTIONED, LOCAL tournaments. If someone has a better plan for doing so, then I'm all ears. But all I've heard has been crickets on the matter.
