Default Southwest Handicap Mini - 8/12 Results

Six players with no fear of the water showed up tonight and tackled The LINKS at Quail Valley, it turned out to be a nice evening for some disc golf. Rick continued his recent trend of improving rounds and turned in another nice round from the blue tees.

Next week (8/19) we're playing Imperial Park. Hope to see you there.

Default Southwest Handicap Mini - 8/19 Results

Cloudy skies probably scared some players away tonight, but those that showed fought the minor winds and prevailed. The handicap system did another good job of leveling the field. Congrats to Rick on a narrow victory.

Next week we'll be at Missouri City Community Park.

my thoughts exactly. unless you have a huge handicapp, what's the point of playing in these? Just a question, not a rant

Well, "the point" is that it's a handicap tourney. The idea of a handicap tourney is to even the field so that anyone has a chance to win.

The way my handicap system is designed getting "paid" isn't based on being good, great, "rec", or beginner. Getting "paid" is the result of, on that specific week, being better than your average historical performance.

The handicap system is designed to level the playing field so that ideally everyone starts on equal ground. Then the players who step up their games the most that week take the top spots.

I have yet to encounter the perfect handicapping system, and disc golf has significant challenges beyond ball golf when it comes to handicapping. But I think I've devised a reasonably good system based on lots of inputs and looking at other leagues & handicaps. The system has evolved and improved over the course of this season.

I've been meaning to post an updated full description of rules and methods but in a nutshell: your handicap is based on one part PDGA rating, one part Southwest Handicap Mini ratings, and two parts rating on the course played that week. There are additional derating factors for the handicaps such as scaling back the handicap value as a percentage, adjusting for course difficulty, and penalizing the previous week's winner a stroke in their next appearance. Most of these factors are designed to adjust for the newer players who have skill progressing faster than their PDGA ratings can keep up.

Default Winter time

Just a question, do we shut down the tuesday nights during the winter when it gets dark early? Or do we start at 4:00? Or change to Saturday AM?
