No Open players have signed up for Shawshank yet. Its way too early for Open players to sign up. Maybe the night before or day of.

Maybe for a c-tier but not for a B-tier! I have a feeling very few will show because very few people outside of Houston know of the event. |

Matt, Dunbar would have been a Mickey Mouse course for you....but Kingwood may have been fun for you. I expect a lot of Masters to start signing up for Shawshank since it's the site for next year's event....and it was being talked up a lot at Gonzales, from what I understand. We'll see if the MPO's come out of the woodwork or not....some of the Austin people might show up!

Dunbar probably would have been Mickey mouse but Kingwood is not a course I would like to play during a tournament because discs can't fly on some of those lines.
Also, you must not have read my earlier post or looked at the schedule or you would have noticed Austin MPOs will be staying in Austin to play a B-tier at Wilco. Along with that Mr. Jims is also the same weekend and is one of the most established events in the DFW area. At the moment I am trying to get a grip on my DG tournament schedule but will probably end up going to Jim's for the $$$ although Wilco is one of my favorite courses in TX. Currently this event has little draw or incentives for anyone besides a MPM player to show...along with many other local events. This is even worse when coupled with the fact very few EYES see this event posted while a few EARS at a tournament may hear of the event. Get it on the PDGA and I will keep it near the top.

Wilco's on Sunday, so it's possible (though not probable) that some Austin players might come down....not that it matters (or in some people's opinion, WE matter) but we had our schedule set up way before either one of those events. Next year we are going to try reaching out to Austin & DFW clubs to hopefully coordinate things better...but what it really boils down to is the lack of open players in Houston...for whatever reason that is.

is it because we lack the high quality courses to create and support an environment in which more rec players would evolve or be inspired to become pro? or is it something else entirely

Maybe it's the stigma of the word "pro" itself....hardly anyone is a "professional" disc golf player....and since our game is a "poor man's" version of ball golf....plus we're in a down economy right now & many of the really higher rated players who could play "pro" maybe don't want to shell out the extra bucks to do so? There are all kinds of factors that might attribute to our lack of "pro" players....let's face facts, though....the great majority of players in our sport are ams...always have been...always will be! Same with ball golf....thousands of people play rec golf, but only a few ever go "pro"! As far as Birdshot goes, read our mission statement one more time....it was never our intention to "cater" to "pros" in the first place. So sour grapes from pros who would rather go where the cash is....well, sorry about that....and sorry that our area doesn't seem to foster pro players.
