Eric, I just got back from the Links I was informed that you put out the painted lines for the tournament.
I have some questions about the blue and orange boxes. Blue #7 the box is up hill #8 the box up hill #12 the box goes from concrete 2 grass If the course design is to create an uneven box then never mind. There are flat options that are in front, behind or next to the painted stripes. A box chosen on natural area should utilize the flattest area. It should not try to imitate an up shot that is uneven or up/down hill. The weather man predicts 40% to 50% scattered showers, for safety I would suggest all grass boxes so people have an option to use cleats. If the design was to have mixed surface boxes then never mind. Orange #1 branch in front of the box to the right is low #2 the box is on a bad hill #8 the box is on concrete and off concrete #9 it’s a down hill box #10 grass to concrete finish It started to rain so I couldn’t take the full time to go over every box also I can't quite remember but are #11 and #12 on concrete? |

Jim, thanks for the feedback.
Weather.com is currently showing 10-30% chances of precipitation on Saturday. Blue The blue tee boxes should all be the standard tee positions that have been in play out there for years now. Orange For the orange tees there are several of them that are extra wide to allow players to tee from the concrete or the adjacent grass surface: #3, #4, and #8. #12 does cross the concrete walkway perpendicularly; again giving players the option to tee from concrete or grass. In that case the technical definition of the teebox would extend 3M back from the rear of the concrete. The low branch on #1 is Neal's idea and intentional. It worked well when we played it at the January event. Neal also mentioned the grass to concrete finish on #10. Personally when I see a tee box that I don't want to step off/over I start a couple steps back from where I normally would (there's a ton of room behind it). But we'll probably move this one back a few feet anyway. #2 is a case of an imperfect tee box. But it is also part of the challenge of that hole. You're correct that the hill does not allow a 25' Vandapproach(tm). We'll look at this one again, but that's where we played it at the January event. |

To all of Jim's points I will agree. With the one concering uneven teepads being the most pressing. In my opinion no box should be intentionally put on any degree of inclination or decline, if flat ground is available it is the responsibility of the course designer to utilize it, even at the detrement to the hole. I have come very close on many occasions to being injured by such "difficult" teeboxes. Most holes at "The Links" are hard enough (water hazards, extreme wind variation, and large areas of concrete OB) without having to add gimmicky and potentially dangerous teeboxes. I believe the last thing any disc golfer wants to think about is if he/she is going to slip, twist, turn, slide, the wrong way on a run up. A perfect example of this is Austin Ridge Bible Church, some would argue on a pure epic scale no course is more beautiful or well laid out in Texas, but with only cedar chip and large rocks making up the teepads it fails overall as a course and will do so until these boxes are fixed.

We'll try to make sure there are no "ankle-breakers" out there tomorrow! If anyone wants to bring a rake or two to put by the ponds that ARE still full, that would be great!

Today the forecast shows partly cloudy with 0-20% chance of precipitation. Re: blue tees. Yes, the intent of the "send off" tourney is to play the blue layout as it's been out there for years. Re: orange boxes. The extra wide boxes are half concrete, half grass. That's something Neal & I did on purpose so you could tee off from the side you desire: concrete or grass. Players have the option of a consistent grass pad, or a consistent concrete pad. Quote:
The 18-hole LINKS Blue layout isn't that hard with SSA of typically ~50. |
