There was a discussion on the PDGA website (I tried, but I couldn't find it) that talked about women getting rated rounds. Since women often play in small tournament fields, have fewer 800+ rated players, and often play from the short tee, women often have trouble getting their rounds rated. Therefore the PDGA will sometimes go out of their way to try and extrapolate round ratings for women. For example, say the women played the short tees in the 1st round but there were not enough gators in that round. The PDGA will sometimes look at the scores from the 2nd round that were played from the short tees. They will use these to somehow extrapolate ratings for the 1st round. They may also use other techniques, but I don't remember and couldn't find the discussion on the PDGA website.

Calculating ratings this way, is not as accurate. However the PDGA is trying to be responsive to people that want more rated rounds. Obviously the easiest solution is for the TD to insure that there are enough gators per round to get ratings for everyone. But this is not always practical.

I think the corrected Feb 2008 ratings are pretty close to being accurate. At least for the intermediate women.

I dunno Rick, I think what is obvious is that the easiest way to ensure that they get rated rounds is to have them play from the same tees. When the PDGA first started up the ratings system, I vowed to play in my rated division (Recreational) until such time as I earned my way up and out of it, then I'd return to playing Masters (or Grandmasters as the case turned out...) But the problem frequently was that the Rec division didn't play from the same tees as everyone else so if the rounds got rated, then they were rated based on a whole bunch of other Rec throwers which seemed like almost guaranteed that we couldn't ever earn our way up out of the division.

I've always tried to encourage that everyone play from the same set of tees to ensure that ratings could be calculated for everyone as fairly as possible.

Why do you think that rounds rated on Rec play makes it impossible to move out of that (REC) division?

I think that the way ratings are based has changed a bit, but it seemed like when I was playing in Rec. my rounds were always based on the rounds of other Rec. players in my division that played the same course at the same time. It seemed like because I was one of the higher rated Rec. players (and had a large number of rated rounds) that I was the "bar" at which the Rec division was being rated against...I was one of the propogators.

Have you torn apart the algorithms? Is there a weighting factor applied to propogators in the same division?

It seemed like the algorithm had a tendency to say "whatever Larry shot, that's going to be a 890-rated round"...

Larry, I can't speak for how the ratings worked originally or even several years ago. But I have gotten to know the system that's been in place for the last couple years.

If the REC players were the only ones playing that particular layout/tees, then that's the case.

Need at least five propagators (all playing the same layout) to get the round rated. All the PDGA members are rated against all the propagators (those rated 800 or higher).

No extra weight per division. Only the the player ratings.
