If you've tried posting anything recently you've probably noticed the new Image Verification software that's been turned on: "reCAPTCHA".
The primary reason for this is that spammers are assaulting this forum in greater numbers each day. Of the 420+ user registrations this site has gotten at least 283 of them have been spammers. Spammers use programs called "bots" to automatically register accounts and generate SPAM on vulnerable forums. For each new user registration I've had to manually verify the authenticity of the user and either approve them or deny them and ban their email and IP address. It got old really fast. And the banning doesn't really help because the spammers just register from different places. So enter "reCAPTCHA". CAPTCHAs are those little squiggly images that humans can usually decipher but computers cannot. If you find it annoying consider these two points. First, you can easily click the rotating arrows button to generate a new CAPTCHA word pair if you have trouble reading the current one. Secondly, by answering each reCAPTCHA challenge you are helping to digitize books and make information more accessible to the world. Read more about that here: http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html Thanks for understanding, helping keep our forum clean, and helping the world. ERic |
