I suggest using Google Docs to convert your spreadsheets into HTML. It produces cleaner code with better browser compatibility. The MS office products have never been ideal for converting to HTML.

The problem with PDFs is the acrobat plug-in is a memory hogging unstable catastrophe. Take a look at Google docs.

Wow!!! Good scoop Chris! Thanks!

I've always had a lot of trouble with the HTML generation of Excel...its very picky and too much of it isn't really controllable.

The drawback with any of it is that it puts a lot extra work on the webmaster to get it converted to whatever it ends up being. Winter-time isn't too bad, but when you've 3 and 4 simultaneous leagues running at once, it all starts adding up.

I'm not a big fan of .pdf files, they are large and require add-ins which come with their own problems too. If I truly had the patience, I'd hand-code this site to keep it small and tight, but the amount of maintenance it would take to keep it maintained (especially when weeknight leagues are running) is just too much to keep up with on a volunteer basis.

Take a look at DiscGolfScene.com for their league support. Chuck started using it for the Miramar league this summer and the site presented stats very nicely. There's no reason that HFDS should have to rebuild something that another site handles really well. As you mention, we're all volunteering for this sort of thing.

I agree that pdfs are big and not always handled well. But you don't have to use Adobe Acrobat reader either. I use FoxIt to open all my pdf files. It's small, doesn't need to be installed, and doesn't use much memory. That being said, I would agree with Chris and probably use Google Docs to convert spreadsheets to html.
