What you've started there is an arms race where players are essentially going to have to buy multiple mulligans in order to be competitive. Or... at least they're going to think they'll have to.

That was evident as well when we did the mulligan doubles at US Masters last year. Merely having a mulligan doesn't guarantee you save a stroke, or even get a better shot.

I see Eric's point, and I agree that a lot of folks seem to think that they have to buy the extra mulligans to be competitive, however, I don't really think that is true. A minority of the mulligans used actually were "good" ones where they saved the player a throw.

All of that being said, I think the most important thing to remember about it is that this is a fund-raiser event to pay HFDS back for the cost of the baskets used to expand the course. And as a fund-raising mechanism, this seems like it is going to be successful. Based on the attitudes of the players that participated, all seemed to be good natured about it and have a lot of fun playing with them. This is the success by which I'd like to see it measured. Nobody minded coughing up extra dollars knowing that it was all going to the club for the course!

The commando has always been a vehicle to fund-raise while playing a little competitive disc golf. Because the mulligan fund is the part used as the fund-raising mechanism, it is what allows it pay out 100% of entry fees.

Thanks to all of the players who support the club by playing in it!

Larry

Mulligans change the game that many competitive players are used to:

Do you use mulligans on missed putts or save them for risky holes (OB, mando, lost disc)?? If you've got a pick-your-hole shotgun start format then savvy players are going to start on or near the dangerous OB holes. That way they know early in their round whether they're using mulligans on the risky holes to almost certainly save strokes. If they play through the risky holes cleanly then they're free to use mulligans later on missed putts that may or may not save them strokes. That gives them an advantage over other players who must decide early whether or not to save their mulligans for risky holes later in the round. In theory, to keep things fair when you're using mulligans you should have everyone play the course in the same order starting on the same hole.

That's just one aspect. Another is actually knowing when to use the mulligan(s) to your best advantage. That's a skill that I'd guess a lot of disc golfers haven't developed well. As you said lot of the mulligans don't result in actually saving a stroke (or more). But that's part of the Commando-style of golf now and the players that are good at it are going to be shooting 3, 4, or 5 strokes better.

We'll be running

The Commando Mini
at 9:00 am Sunday morning.

The cost is: $10
plus optional $1 Ace Pot and optionally up to 5 mulligans at $1 a piece.

All mulligan proceeds to HFDS for the course improvement fund!

I's going to be a warm day tomorrow, so bring plenty of liquids to keep hydrated! Wind is predicted to be 10-15 mph so that should make it pretty challenging.

Hope to see all of you out there at 9:00!

Larry

Yet another edition of the Commando Mini will be running again on Sunday July 1st!

We've received about an inch of rain in the neighborhood around here, so if you're planning on playing in the morning, you'd better bring some water-socks and extra towels! It's bound be a little soggy out there.

We start at 9:00 am.

Cost is still just $10 for entry fee

Optional $1 Ace Pot and optionally, up to 5 $1 mulligans can be purchased. All muligan fund money goes to HFDS for course improvements.
