Default An article about disc golf/The Leader Newspaper

Someone with The Leader contacted me through email to write an article about disc golf. Here is the message part of the email:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
we are interested in writing a story about the Houston Flying Disc Society, so I was hoping you could give me a little bit of information about the society and the history of the sport. What I have so far from my research is that the members play disc golf at local park, in local parks, including T.C. Jester Park in our coverage area. Here are some information I need to write the story:

1. The rules of disc golf
2. What's the difference between disc golf and frisbee golf or if there isn't any, why isn't it called that way?
3. How long it's been around and its history (for example, how it was created)
4. When do members play at T.C. Jester Park
5. And any other information you think it would be important for the article.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So, I need a couple of eloquent people to address these questions and send your replies ASAP. Obviously, the rules could overwhelm the person very quickly. However, some short explanation should be possible. I just don't have the time to do this. Thanks for your replies. Question 4 is pretty easy since I play league at jester on Thursday evenings starting between 5:30 and 6:00.

Peace,

Dennis Woodward

Hey Dennis!!! When answering item #4, don't forget to tell them about the Sunday morning HFDS Commando Mini which is open to all and starts at 9:00 am.

The league season on weeknights will be ending in another month, so the Commando is the only gig running in our neck of the woods until Spring.

Proceeds go to the HFDS Course Improvement Fund which provided most of the baskets for the expansion.

1. Disc Golf is played like ball golf, but instead uses a flying disc. One point is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The object is to acquire the lowest score.

2. The word 'Frisbee' is a trademarked name, therefore the term 'Disc Golf' was coined. When someone refers to 'Frisbee Golf', or 'Frolf', they are actually referring to the sport of Disc Golf which is played with special discs designed for the sport.

3. The early history of disc golf is closely tied to the history of the recreational flying disc, or Frisbee, and may have been invented in the early 1900s. Modern disc golf started in the early 1960s, when it seems to have been invented in many places and by many people independently. Three of the best-known figures in the sport are George Sappenfield, who privately called the game "Basket Frisbee", "Steady Ed" Headrick who introduced the first formal disc golf target with chains and a basket, and Dave Dunipace who invented the modern golf disc.

4. Disc Golf is generally played at TC Jester Park from sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week, with the highest level of activity being weekend days and weekday evenings.

5. The golf discs used today are much smaller and heavier than traditional flying discs, typically about 8 or 9 inches in diameter and weighing between 150 and 180 grams. Discs used for disc golf are designed and shaped for control, speed, and accuracy as opposed to general-purpose flying discs (Frisbees), such as those used for playing guts or ultimate, have a more traditional shape, similar to a catch disc. There is a wide variety of discs used in the sport of Disc Golf and they are generally divided into three categories: putters, mid-range discs, and drivers.

On #4, if it needs to be mentioned, you could combine our answers to something like this:

4. Disc Golf is generally played at TC Jester Park from sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week, with the highest level of activity being weekend days and weekday evenings. A weekly league run by HFDS is held on Thursday evenings and a weekly mini tournament is held every Sunday morning at 9am.
