Mini's are usually a one round mini-tournament (most regular tourneys are at least two rounds). Birdshot is a local orginization started by Chuck Conaway & myself (Billy Gilbert) & a couple of other people about a year ago whose mission was/is to bring affordable one-day PDGA sanctioned tournaments once a month to the greater Houston area. You can find out more about us at houstonbirdshot.com....our tournaments are mostly geared toward the beginner & amateur players (we're beginner friendly) who might be PDGA members who want to work on their rating with PDGA without having to drive out of town to do it. And a lot of out of town tourneys are 2-day events which gets expensive with lodging, etc. If you are interested in seeing what the PDGA is all about, check out their website at pdga.com. Our mini's are always on a Saturday morning & are usually finished by noon...they are half the price of our regular tournaments & have a cash payout for each division usually to the top 50% of the players in each division.

Miller,
Birdshot is a GREAT little group, very friendly, very accomadating and they do an awesome job holding very fun tournaments. As soon as you get your club organized, you need to get them out to a Birdshot event where they can meet a ton of other very friendly disc golfers....

Disregard any negative comments you may read here about them, they are Completely inaccurate. If your playing disc golf because you love the game, then you'll find yourself looking forward to the next months tournament that they put on, the day after you played this months tournament...

When I first found this board I saw a ton of negativity aimed at Birdshot and it scared me away from going out to their tournaments, finally the couriosity got to me and I went out to the Spring Valley, tournament, and you couldn't ask to meet 2 more friendly guys than Chuck and Billy.

Also there are other groups like the North Side Chain Gang who are holding fun and friendly minis on the north side and work hand in hand with Birdshot and HFDS to further disc golf in Houston.

As they say..."Jump in, the waters fine"

To be honest: not "completely". They have made mistakes, they'll be the first to own up to that too. But they learn from them and their tournaments have gotten better as the year has progressed.

But Scott's points are all valid and Birdshot has a strong following that is under-represented on this forum.

Ok, so I was thinking about registering for the Birdshot tourney and went to the webpage and it said registration was from 8-8:45 and that there was a cap of 36 people. Does that mean it's first-come first-serve? What's the "open" division for? How do I know which category I fall into? Can I bring my kids? (They are only 1 and 3 and wouldn't be playing, but they do slow me down a little bit.) Thanks everyone for the info!!

We don't do any pre-registration for the minis (we always have it for the regular tournaments) so yes, it is first come-first served....and since there's only nine holes if we wanted to keep it 4 on a card it would be limited to 36. That being said, if we have more than 36 show up (which would surprise me but it's possible) we can have a few fivesomes. As far as bringing the kiddies along, not a problem...a couple of guys almost always bring their kids & one of them even pays & plays (that would be Conal Stillwagon & he's only four & has a mean backhand!!!). So please...come on out & check it out...we're usually done by noon & a lot of times some of the players will stick around & play some more or hit another course. Chuck & I are probably heading up to Shawshank in Huntsville to check out the course for our Championship Finale up there in a couple of weeks. If we end up not going to Huntsville, we actually have some basket chains we need to put up at the Mozola course downtown...so we would go there instead.

Okay Billy,
You mentioned the kid, and he and I will be there on Saturday. We are also playing Shawshank that afternoon if you are so inclined. Conall has been in a zone for the last week. Actually been keeping score for him this past week. Shot +12 @ McDade on Sunday, and then +12 @ Bear Branch from the novice boxes on Tuesday. This was actual score, penalties and the like. Ashamedly, he legitimately took the box from me twice on Sunday, and twice on Tuesday. Does this speak to his progress or my crappy play? LOL. Shoot, the little punk hit the basket on one skip on #5 @ Bear Branch! Lord help the boy's ego if the 4 of us on the card had to pay that one out. And yes, the 51'ers on the card did in fact pay him the dollar each owed.
