TC Jester expansion has been approved by the City of Houston Parks Department. We need to come up with funds for 9 additional baskets.
We are now taking pledges and anyone interested should email Patrick, Richard or Derek or Personal message BetterCounsel / derek / or ThePatrick through the message board or reply to this post. Any donation is greatly appreciated! |

I really don't understand why the city approves the expansion but can't come up with $2700 for the baskets.

Because the former doesn't actually cost money, and the latter does?

The real question is Where are you gonna find 9 more StrokeSavers?

I'm not sure there are any more Strokesavers around, but from the original installation back in '96 and '97 when the project was contracted, we purchased more baskets than were put in the ground. There were actually 2 undeveloped parks (Alief and one out in the Red Bluff area) that were slated for future development. It has never happened, but the baskets were purchased and put into storage at HPARD. Over the years, I believe some of those have been used to repair and replace others. (Mason park comes to mind.) I'm not sure if there are any more of those around, but there should have been about two 9 holers worth plus 2 practice baskets, so 20 baskets total. Does anyone know if any of these still exist in an HPARD storage area somewhere and if so what the balance is?

In my opinion it is a cop-out to say that there isn't the money do you know that the annual budget of the Parks and Recreation Dept. is $74,852,000 in 2010. When you are talking about that kind of money $2700 can always be found somewhere if they think it is important. That is .00355% of their budget.
An example of that .00355% is of a budget is the Sports Ministry Budget at Windwood is $2500 for the year. That is less than 9 Cents! If someone came to me and said hey can I have 9 cents to make an improvement to something I would make the effort to find it. I know that is very simple but the honest truth is that it is the TRUTH. So the answer is WHY DOESN'T the HPRD think it is important? Do they not know the number of people that use the courses? Do they need hard numbers so they can quantify a budget for disc golf? If you go to http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/pdfs/...nualReport.pdf and on page 10 they have hard numbers of the services that are used and how many people use them. If they do know the numbers then why do they treat disc golf like they do? That needs to be an honest question that is asked of a HPRD staff person. If we know that they don't think DG is a real sport, etc, etc, then we can work to change their mind. I don't have the answer but for them to look you in the eye and say they don't have the money is just not being honest. Just my opinion.

Where's the "like" button. Too bad we can't all write a letter or start a petition and get signatures to put numbers with our request for more budget.
