I agree that this is one of the best ways to enhance this course. If we are clever enough, we can find an organization that would help for Arbor Day or something similar.

This what Trees for Houston says on their home page: "Trees For Houston is a non-profit organization dedicated to planting, protecting and promoting trees. In our 28 years, we have planted over 419,000 trees to benefit the Houston community. We recognize that trees clean the air, mitigate run off, cool the surroundings, and beautify our neighborhoods. You can help. You can plant, donate, learn, work, and make friends. Houston needs trees. We need you. " |

I sat out in the park and counted (had signed petitions of support) for a 24-hour period. Agnes Moffitt park from noon on Thursday until noon on Friday. We had 180 some odd signatures. About 2/3 of those players played more than one round when they were out there. Some folks played as many as 5 rounds in that period. The traffic at Moffitt far exceeded that of any other course in town. Maybe the numbers have changed lately, I don't know, but the popularity of Moffitt was never due to the strength (or its SSA) of the course. We have approval to install concrete tee boxes where they sit right now. Let's jump on that while the "gettin's" good. If you want to link it to the back-side of a proposal to redesign Moffitt, then that is going to take a long, drawn-out process of approval both at the club-level as well as at the City-level, and all I'm saying is that it would likely meet a lot of resistance at the club level and that would only delay our opportunity to DO something right now. We've had the basic agreement with HPARD for two months already. The heirarchy of the parks service changes around fairly frequently and we have an agreement pending with the current administration. If just a couple of those guys retire or get moved around, then we are likely to lose that "deal" that we've got in front of us right now. I'm of the opinion that if we can jump on it at this cost right now, then it kind-of establishes a base-line cost that can be applied at other parks too - such as the Jester expansion! ![]() Larry

Well, there's one way to find out, right? Run another poll, or have a vote at the next meeting. Hell, this issue alone might help drive membership. Moffitt gang, let the regulars know that the club may or may not be interested in redesign and may or may not be willing fund concrete tee pads. I bet that will get people to come to the next meeting.

As I stated in last month's HFDS meeting, the HFDS Board has a fiduciary responsibility to the club, and in my opinion part of that responsibility is the judicious use of finances. There was (and is) a movement to use a significant portion of the HFDS cash on hand (over 25%, and up to 75% or more) to fund this project. There needs to be a limit to how much of our cash on hand is appropriated. I suspect we do not have any controls in our organizational documentation to prevent this, but fiduciary responsibilities should prevent abuse here.
